What is this Event Summary about ?

This event summary is about my impressions from my own  evaluation  point  thru video-scouting of the FIBA U16  EuroBasket Division A . This Event Summary focuses on players who showed flashes, potential upside and interesting tools throughout the tournament, but may not be on the level of the top prospects.

The evaluations shown on this website represent initial scouting impressions. Detailed scouting reports are prepared upon request.

Ilian Toholin was one of the players, who caught my attention due to the role he was able to fill within the team structure, throughout the tournament. He is not a player who can currently be compared with top prospects of this age class, but i see enough flashes that made me want to take a deeper look at his game.

First, let's take a look at his profile.

Ilian is a 15 year old (November 2010) Shooting-Guard, who projected this tournament as defensive minded running connecting guard with two - way upside.

His frame is over average - excellent, which allows him to build up strength thru it, with much room for potential development into it. He projected a slim - average overall body build, which limits his ability to finish thru contact situations and shows his limited contact balance thru it.  His body length in combination, with his position was something that striked me positive. While he is projecting an overall height of 194 cm / 6'4", in combination with plus wingspan and long limbs, which gives him advantages for defensive versatility.

The FIBA EuroBasket U16 is a national youth basketball tournament, which is essential for the European youth basketball section, which allows to see the  best European prospects competeting against each other. This years Division A was held in Oradea, in Romania from 7 - 15. August, 2026. This allows a direct comparison from the best European youth prospects, which potentially projects players who didn't get until now this much attention through their country, league or thru an overall unrecognized statline or limited availability of statline. This summary is not about the top prospects of this tournament.

This Event Summary focuses on players who showed flashes, potential upside and interesting tools throughout the tournament, but may not be on the level of the top prospects. These are a few of the players who caught my attention throughout the tournament.

Some showed flashes with potential upside, while others are still more raw in certain areas but displayed interesting tools and flashes within their role.

Johan Meinberg  (the rights belong to the FIBA)

His positional size and length could make his profile interesting within US Highschool / prep and college basketball systems.  His lateral quickness and footwork was something that decided me to put him into this rubric, Beyond the Boxscore.  In his 1 on 1 defense he showed a deep defensive stance with active arms, for the potential shot contest and steal.

He projected a strong motor within his defensive playstyle especially in 1 on 1 situations, which allows him to stay in front of his matchup in 1 on 1 situations.

He is not a primary offensive creator at this stage. However, his offensive game showed secondary playmaking upside , while he currently projects more as a connector who looks for the extra kickout pass, when the driving  lane / zone is closed.

While he is not having the ball this much in his hands due to his playstyle, he shows active off-ball movement with flashes of understanding how to make himself free. It needs to be monitored if he tends to over move himself without the ball.

What striked me also in his offensive game, was his relatively one paced ballhandling. I did not see many flashes of speed changes or manipulation in it, which makes him readable for his defenders, while he does not consistently attack closeouts directly, which allows defenders to recover.

I already had Johan Meinberg on my watchlist at the Season 2025/26 JBBL Top-4 in Berlin, where he also caught my attention and was voted as the best JBBL player of the season, so i was interested to see how he would perform at this tournament.

Johan Meinberg is a 16 year old (July 2010) Center, who projected this tournament as two-way screen & roll interior presence. He is  physically advanced for his age, while projecting an advanced over average frame. His overall build within it is lean, early staged athletic with definition into it. His shoulders are broad which gives him fuctional advantages in post-up, box-out, rebounding and finishing through contact situations. While having an eye on his length he projects a body height listed 211 cm / 6'11".

Johan is a player who works mainly thru screen & roll and second chance scoring situations, while he is moving solid around the rim. He is capable finishing over the rim  with a solid acceleration in mid his vertical jump. His functional advantage with an eye on his offensive rebounding allows him to score in second chance situations and gives the team second chance positions.

His well timed physical screen settings are on a high level for his age, which gives the ballhandling players in this situations advantages. While we are talking about his screening, i need to mention his ability and understanding to block spaces for his teammates around the rim free  so they have an open driving lane. He showed flashes to develop into a floor-running player.

One of his limitations lacks in the fact, that his offensive game is limited in his versatility. That was good visible in the game against France, where France made a solid job closing the zone, so he was limited in his roll situations after screening.

Johan has thru his age, physical profile and current impact significant room for development. His combination of size with an eye on his age, mobility and functional strength gives him an intriguing long-term upside.

We are staying at the German Roster. One Player from Germany got my attention, thru his potential upside with an eye on his build, overall athleticism and two-way potential.

Lukas Schmidt is a 15 year old (August 2010) Forward, who projected this tournament as slashing connector with two-way upside.  He projects a over average frame, with potential to build up strength within it and shows overall potential for further development. His overall bodybuild projects a slim, lean early staged athletic body build, which gives him functional advantages in his lateral quickness, change of direction and overall  footwork.  On the other side his build limits his core strength, which makes him attackable for his opponent. While having a look at his length he is listed 203 cm / 6'7" within a plus wingspan with long limbs, which gives him a potential defensive versatility and avantages for his rebounding.

His acceleration and first step are excellent, thru that he is capable to explode out of the drive with a vertical pop into it.

He is a player who is playing the extra pass and playing overall connective. He can shoot out of the triple threat, attack the closeout with a quick first step and potentially finish over the rim out of the drive. Next to his slashing he also showed the ability to shoot from behind the arch, when he is free. While we taking a deeper look at his shot mechanics he has a slow shot release. While in off-ball situations he showed flashes of situational off-ball movement and floor-running potential, where he showed off-ball screens and cutting sequenzes. On the defensive side he showed flashes of tight 1 on 1 defense with a deep defensive stance and active arms. Thru his length he has functional advantages in closing passing lines and contesting shots.

One of his current limitations is his overall physical development. While his lean frame provides advantages in terms of lateral quickness, vertical pop and change of direction , he currently lacks core strength and contact balance which makes him attackable for his opponent. He also showed situational, uncertainty in his ballhandling and when he is getting doubled.
